Is manure really worth spreading, or should I just haul it away?
It’s worth spreading. Manure is free fertilizer, full of the same nutrients you’d otherwise buy in bags. The key is spreading it properly so it helps your land instead of creating new problems.
What size spreader do I need?
The size that’s best for you depends on everything from your spreading frequency to how much your livestock produces.

Should I choose a Ground Driven or PTO Manure Spreader?
Ground driven spreaders are easy to use, work on a variety of towing vehicles, and have enhanced safety features. They’re best for small hobby farms, show stock owners, and small ranchers.
PTO driven spreaders tackle large projects. They’re harder to operate, but offer more capacity and capability for skilled operators.
What are some basic spreading best practices?

How long should I let my pasture rest after laying down manure?
The duration of time a pasture should rest after the last application depends on the local environment. Hot and moist areas and seasons should “extend” resting periods. A rotational grazing routine provides the best opportunity to spread on recently “rested” portions of pasture land. An eco-balanced pasture or paddock reduces parasites, increases vegetation growth, increases rotation rates, and reduces odor and flies around the farm. ABI’s optional “Fines” or “Pasture” pan is required. For the ultimate in paddock health, spread composted manure.
Can I spread on a pasture or paddock?
Yes. Any spreader used on pastures or paddocks requires advanced features that shred, control flow, and evenly spread on the ground. ABI spreaders do all that and more, fitting perfectly into your rotational grazing or pasture rotation routine. One of the best things you can do is spread a light shredded and pulverized manure application to “resting” pastures or paddocks. Do this early on long sunny and dry days to allow it to dry quickly. Allow the pasture area to “rest” for at least a couple of weeks before allowing livestock to graze again, reducing the possibility of parasite exposure.

We bought the 50 ground drive. It is very well built and worth the extra money. Spreads evenly and beaks up large clumps. We have 9 horses; we sweep the pasture every other day and clean stalls every day. We compost with a mixture of fertilizer, then spread every 2 months. Makes great top dressing. We can spread a very thin layer with the adjustable feed on the A.B.I. I would purchase it again and would highly recommend it. Oh, and the customer service is unbelievably good. The toughest job ever. In a word, OUTSTANDING. Product: We have had a chance to give the manure spreader a serious workout on the toughest pile one could imagine. We have cleared outside pens having manure, hay and heavy moisture. The spreader does a fantastic job tearing this stuff up and dispersing it in the pasture. Great Little Spreader. Purchased the 50 PTO Classic Spreader about 4 months ago. Perfect spreader for a small horse farm and makes quick work of manure disposal. Doesn’t spread a wide swath but does a good job of breaking up any clumps. Used it with shavings and straw bedding without any problems. It’s well built and with a little maintenance and periodic washing, I expect it to be the last manure spreader I’ll need to buy. I did considerable research before buying and don’t think you’ll find a better spreader for the price.
